JCA Observership Program

Become a leader of your community.....

Founded in 2012, the Observership Program facilitates the involvement of young, talented and energetic individuals in a structured experience on non-profit Boards.

Once screened and trained, each Observer is thoughtfully paired with an organisation for a 12 month period. During that time, Observers attend all board and/or committee meetings as non-voting members, and learn about fundamental principles and functions of non-profit boards, the roles of board members, it’s decision making process, fiscal processes, and other governance priorities. The program also provides targeted training and mentorship designed to impart important skills that Observers can to bring to future boardroom discussions.

After a successful pilot program, the 2017 Observership Program will run as a stand alone organisation, a result of JCA's partnership with AICD and Philanthropy Australia. Two application streams are now available to applicants:

A JCA Stream, which will place the observer on a board of one of JCA’s internal communal organisations; and

A General Stream, which will place the observer on a general, non-communal, board.

Applications for the 2017 program have now opened. Applications close Sunday 25 September.

“The Observership program has been an inspirational learning experience. The sessions exposed me to local leaders in business and philanthropy and provided invaluable opportunities to interact and learn from these community leaders. The educational sessions dealing with not for profit organisations, legislation and board governance helped to prepare me for my observership role… and the experience has opened my eyes to the important work being undertaken by these committee members and the great responsibility that this entails. I thank JCA and the major sponsors of this program for the opportunity to participate in this rewarding initiative.” - 2013 Observer
